Busy Senanayakians showed their competency keeping abreast with the other leading schools to gain the 3 rd place in the Best Environment Friendly School of the year, 2008 at a ceremony organized by the Green Forest Association.

Also, the school was awarded Rs.25,000/= to motivate students in similar activities such as horticulture, exhibiting the boards of proverbial expressions and awareness programmes for pupil community about the environment conservation, Herbal gardens and ponds.

The home garden concept was initiated in 1992 as a born child of Mrs.Chithra Wickramasinghe (Senior Assistant Principal - presently) with the collaboration of then principals. The sole concept of this project was to make some awareness to the pupil community to show and inculcate friendly attachment towards flora and fauna culminating the love towards all beings.

At the inception, children were provided with nursery plants by the school to make them learn how to maintain a nursery at home and the art of nurturing a home garden. Later the plants were distributed among the children at a nominal fee. With the arrival of present principal Mr.Ashoka Senani Hewage - Great pillar of reawakening of the D.S.Senannayake College - was a beacon to Mrs.Chithra Wickramasinnghe under whose guidance D.S. Home Garden expanded and flourished to a Corporate Home Garden to the other schools especially in the Metropolis, consisting Bee keeping project, Medicinal herbal plants, Horticulture, Animal husbandry, Mushroom plantation and also Converting cow dung to produce Bio gas to maintain a stove for cooking purposes and manure, there by sticking the concept of organic farming - finally making Bio gas liquid made of cow dung and plant residues to use as insecticide. This Bio gas liquid was used to control the insects in the school Home Garden itself. So, as a whole, this D.S. Home Garden became a forecourt of demonstration as a model farm to the other schools.

Especially, we must mention here it is proud to possess school garbage recycling to produce manure for this Home Garden and other plants community. This achievement as the Best Friendly School of the Year 2008 (3 rd place) is a great reckon as the 1 st place in Colombo district and also a boon to strengthen the concept of Hon. President Mahinda Rajapaksha - "Api Wawamu Rata Nagamu" (Let's grow & prosper for the country).
